Job Description: Interactive Entertainments Designer

The Interactive Entertainments Designer is responsible for creation and implementation of each themed game story, conceptualisation and production of individual puzzles for a game story, as part of an iterative process to maximise player immersion within the interactive entertainment play experience.

You will plan and define all the elements of an interactive entertainment: its setting; structure; rules; story flow; characters; the objects, props, and devices available to the players; and modes of play. Once the entertainment/game is devised, the Designer prototypes the immersive assets, props and puzzles that allow the game to be played.

Responsibilities

  • Develop designs or initial concept designs for interactive entertainments including game play.
  • Act as the champion of the story, script and speech for the product.
  • Act as the central resource for all things narrative related as well as design and prototype interactive mechanical, electro mechanical & electronic puzzles.
  • Manage own schedule to accommodate the deliverables of each project and propose solutions for conflicts as they arise.
  • Conduct research to obtain factual background information relevant to story/design goals.
  • Articulate industry trends, innovative solutions and cutting-edge styles and design principles that meet the goals of each project.
  • Design and develop the narrative of an individual interactive entertainment (eg an Escape Room), craft compelling narrative elements, and define systems through which they will be delivered to players.
  • Generate game scripts and storyboards.
  • Create the visual and physical aspects of the interactive entertainments at the concept stage.
  • Use 2D or 3D modelling and maker software, such as [XXXX], at the prototyping and production stage to create mechanical, electro-mechanical, and electronic puzzles and set dressings.
  • Produce the audio features of the game, such as character voices, music and sound effects.
  • Have responsibility for technical strategy and execution of projects from concept to market.
  • Plan resources and manage both the development team and the process.
  • Test individual puzzles and room components for durability, playability, safety and “room flow”.
  • Train staff in the running of individual interactive entertainments.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to provide content and build prototypes for physical interactive entertainments (e.g. Escape Rooms)
  • Exceptional writing ability and ability to develop visual theory into production-ready concepts as well is logical and physical specifications for interactive entertainment products.
  • Understanding the theory of, and experience in, game design including the use of sound, visual elements, special effects, and electronics, embedded control systems, wireless networking, to maximise interactive entertainment play experience.
  • Comprehensive production experience in the development of interactive entertainments.
  • Good knowledge of standard software and hardware used to prototype and create, puzzles and sets used in interactive entertainments.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Experience in usability testing and change management.
  • Experience in building, producing and running successful interactive entertainments in both festival and permanent settings.
